Legacy Community Primary School

The Legacy Community Primary School has been owned and operated by the BWA since 2012.

Opening the school was considered an important initiative by members of the BWA as part of their objective to "mobilize widows to support education of their orphaned children". Before the Legacy Community Primary School, access to quality education was identified as being a major challenge for many households in the community because of the high fees families had to pay and the far distances that students had to travel. Not only did the BWA consider it worthwhile to open the school in order to advance quality education in the community but they also recognized it for it's potential as a sustainable income-generating business for the members. Before opening the Legacy Community Primary School, the BWA had successfully operated small-scale poultry, chicken, and other agriculture-based businesses as part of their microfinance loan program.

The Legacy Community Primary School has been a successful endeavour for the members of the BWA and has had a positive impact on the community-at-large. Under the direction of our Project Director, Bago Birihanze Augustine, the school has grown from a school of only 1 building and 3 classes in 2012, to a school of over 10 buildings and 7 full classes in 2024. As well, the school, teachers and students continue to prove the school's success across the district; in 2023, our P7 class came 5th out of 154 schools in Mitooma District on the national P7 leaving exams. These mandatory exams are a major barometer of student and school success in Uganda, and being ranked highly helps to improve our school's recruitment and enrollment each year.

The site of the Legacy Community Primary School continues to develop over time with infrastructure developments that are being funded by The Figment Foundation, another Canadian registered charity that we have partnered with since 2021. Since it opened, the Legacy Community Primary School has become a beacon of hope and positive change for the surrounding community adding to our organization’s positive reputation in our region and bolstering community support for our projects.
